Presidents as Character Witnesses

The first time as tragedy, the second time as farce.

Nixon is on tape calling Gordon Liddy a "nut." (Oliver Stone has his Nixon call Liddy a fruitcake, while his Haldeman echoes the real Nixon in agreeing that Liddy's nutty.)

Reminds of a dimly remembered anecdote I'm not gonna bother trying to look up. When Andrew Jackson was in the Floridas provoking war with Spain and slaughtering Indians, Thomas Jefferson wrote to... Madison, I think, though it could have been Albert Gallatin... his estimation of Jackson: "He really is crazy."
